Sandvik introduces certified lifting solutions for raise boring
Sandvik has introduced two certified lifting solutions designed to reduce lifting risks and improve control during raise boring maintenance and assembly. The offering includes a patented cutter lifting tool and a certified reamer lifting system with removable lifting shackles.
Raise boring cutters are commonly lifted and positioned using lifting slings wrapped around the cutter body. Their cone-shaped geometry and the different mounting angles required across a reamer head often make lifting less secure.
Sandvik’s cutter lifting tool secures and positions the cutter at the angle required to dress the reamer more efficiently, reducing the need for manual intervention. Field testing and early customer use have demonstrated faster cutter installation and removal.
“Gauge cutters are especially difficult to install because of their mounting angle,” said Anders Lindblom, Senior R&D Professional at Sandvik Mining. “The tool positions the cutter at the correct angle for its saddle, reducing the manual handling needed to get it into position.”
The cutter lifting tool has a maximum working load of 150 kilograms and is compatible with all Sandvik raise boring cutter and saddle models, including those used on push-bore reamers. Sandvik will include the tool in its standard offering to customers worldwide and promote its use in all rental contracts.
The reamer-head lifting system combines certified, rated lifting shackles with a revised reamer-head design. The lifting shackles are removed before drilling to protect them from damage during operation.
Independent specialists in simulation and heavy lifting have verified the reamer-head lifting design. Older compatible reamer heads can be retrofitted at a Sandvik workshop.
Both solutions are commercially available globally, supported by operating instructions.
