Driven by purpose - committed to impact

Within Rock Tools, our strategy is clear - together with our customers, we shape the sustainable mines of the future and drive the change towards an industry where productivity and sustainability go hand in hand.

Rock Tools sustainability deep dives

Our focus areas

We align our sustainability efforts with established global frameworks, such as the United Nations Agenda 2030, the Paris Agreement, and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. But what does sustainability really mean for a manufacturer of premium rock tools to the global mining and construction industries?

Listen to Magnus Selling, Sustainability Manager Rock Tools, as he dives deeper into the details of our focus areas.

Watch deep dive #1

Choosing the right rock tools is driving efficiency and sustainability in every drilling operation.

Watch deep dive #2

Collaborating with scrap-based steel suppliers when manufacturing our rock tools is vital in decarbonizing our supply chain.

Watch deep dive #3

Mining is our business, but sustainability drives us to constantly seek smarter ways to increase reusage and circularity.

Watch deep dive #4

Production units with low carbon footprint is necessary in the quest for more climate-conscious rock tools.

Watch deep dive #5

Lowering our transport emission is possible by sea freight, train and electrical options, and we do our best to limit the use of air freight.

Watch deep dive #6

The road to net zero is long, yet we are both driven and committed to do our part for the industry.

Number 1

Life Cycle Assessment of top hammer drill bits

We are the first drilling tools supplier with a validated carbon footprint assessment for our top hammer bits. To quantify CO2e emissions on a detailed level, we have concluded a life cycle assessment declaration, now verified by independent third party supplier, EPD Hub.

Circular mining bit by bit

EX360 local extraction units

A unique innovation from Sandvik that efficiently and safely separates the carbide inserts from used drill bits with minimal manual handling. It also reduces CO₂e emissions through less scrap shipping, energy-efficient heating, and the benefits of material repurposing.

Everyday sustainability

Sustainability come in many forms and the smallest change could still bring a big impact. Our annual sustainability report is a reflection of where we stand today and a roadmap for what lies ahead. It is our way of turning ambition into measurable action.

Our yearly progress

  • Sustainable solutions

Sales met our sustainable solutions criteria
    42%
  • Net zero

Reduced carbon footprint of production units since 2019
    -90%
  • Circularity

Recycled raw materials in carbide production
    57%

Community involvement

Our service offerings and programs - such as resharpening and recycling - contribute to community involvement, and support in creating job opportunities in mine regions and remote areas. By staying close to our communities and enabling local opportunities, we are not only closing the loop - we are also helping shape a more sustainable and inclusive future for the mining industry.

Steel circularity

Steel as raw material is our major source of climate impact - covering 55% of our total scope - and by consious collaboration with only scrap-based steel suppliers (that uses electric arc furnace) we have reduced the CO2e footprint from our used steel by 70%.

Recycled caps on rods and tubes

We have replaced the traditional blue plastic end caps on our top hammer rods and tubes with 100% post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR). This change eliminates unnecessary additives and cuts CO₂e emissions by 54% compared to fossil-based solutions - all while still maintaining the same high level of protection and performance our products are known for.

Rock tools services

For more sustainable performance

In addition to providing your operations with premium-quality rock tools, we offer a suite of services and digital solutions designed to enhance your drilling operations and reduce your impact, everyday – all year round.

Increased productivity is reduced impact

Malleo™ RH570

Malleo RH570 hammer

Malleo™ RH570 hammer is engineered for high air efficiency and increased impact power, which reduces fuel consumption and lowers CO2e emissions. Delivering a better fuel economy supports the growing demand for sustainable practices, while cutting valuable operational costs.

Golden shank

Golden shank adapter

Shank adapters are heavy and very time-consuming to change. A long service life is of course crucial when planning and performing your drilling operation - but also in lowering the climate impact by using fewer tools to get the job done.

Curved thread system

Curved thread system

The innovative top hammer curved thread systems, CT55 and CT67, push the limits for productivity, durability and sustainability. With higher penetration rate, improved hole straightness and fewer breakages, you not only increase your drilling capacity - you also radically lower your fuel consumption.
