Toro® diesel-electric truck
Driven by customer needs, extensive industry experience, and continuous investment in R&D, Sandvik is preparing to introduce an underground diesel-electric truck.
As a basis, the truck is built using proven technology, where the components are chosen with a focus on performance, reliability, safety and modularity. With this base, a layer of technological innovation is added to build a new industry-leading Toro® truck.
When released for the market, this large diesel-electric truck will become a key element in Sandvik Load and Haul electric and modular product family.

1. Diesel engine
The primary power source. Burns diesel fuel to generate mechanical energy.
2. Generators
Connected to the diesel engine. Convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy. This electricity is then transmitted to electric hub motors.
3. Hub motors
Receive power from the generators and convert it back into mechanical energy.

"Stepping stone to the future"
In partnership with the customer, we’re deploying diesel-electric load and haul solutions that bridge proven diesel performance with the productivity and sustainability of electric drive systems. This collaboration marks a strategic step toward the next generation of mining technology.
Designed with the customers for the customers
At Sandvik, the first and most important driver for developing diesel-electric technology is customer demand. Throughout the product development process from scoping to test trials, collaboration is close to ensure the truck will meet the actual needs and performance expectations in the underground environment.

"Definitely a game changer"
The new diesel-electric truck marks a major leap in underground haulage. By replacing the mechanical driveline with advanced electric components, the design delivers smoother operation, greater torque control, and improved efficiency.
Developed in close collaboration with the customer, this next-generation machine reflects real-world feedback and engineering excellence—setting a new benchmark in performance and operator comfort.
Expected benefits
During the design phase of the new diesel-electric truck, several potential benefits have been identified, though actual performance metrics will be confirmed through testing.
For example, the technology enables the elimination of components such as transmissions, drive shafts, and axles, resulting in fewer serviceable parts. This, in turn, leads to lower operating costs, reduced maintenance, minimized downtime, a smaller parts inventory, and enhanced reliability.
In addition, further reduction is anticipated to our already best-in-class fuel efficiency. To support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, all our trucks—including the diesel-electric model—are compatible with renewable HVO100 fuel.

Best-in-class fuel efficiency
By seamlessly integrating a powerful diesel engine with advanced electric drive technology, it minimizes fuel consumption while maximizing productivity.

Reduced maintenance and lower operating costs
The diesel-electric technology enables the elimination of components such as transmissions, drive shafts, and axles, resulting in fewer serviceable parts.

Enhanced reliability and minimized downtime
Robust components, simplified maintenance access, and intelligent monitoring systems work together to reduce unplanned stops and extend service intervals.
